![]() “Baltimore! (crowd cheers) I got a crush on you!…” ![]() “Alright…you know what town I’m settling to now (crowd cheers)…” ““Independence Day” (crowd cheers) that was the first song I wrote about fathers and sons…I think I was around 24 or 25, it’s the kind of song you write when you’re young…and you’re first startled by your parents’ humanity…you’re shocked to find that there’s other people in the house…that they might have had their own dreams and desires and hopes that…that mean to them as much as yours meant to you…that may or may not have played out for ‘em as they thought…and all you can see when you’re young are the adult compromises that they had to make to build a life…and you still can’t quite see the blessings that come with compromise so all you see is that world closing in on you and all you can think about is getting away…well, I had a simple setting for “Independence Day,” it was just a late night conversation around the kitchen table between two people that loved each other…but were struggling to understand one another…this is “Independence Day” (crowd cheers)…” “Let’s hear some Baltimore party noise! (crowd cheers)…” “Alright (crowd cheers) good evening, good evening (crowd cheers) alright, alright…”The River” (crowd cheers) let’s go (crowd cheers) ”The River” was my coming-of-age record…all the records I made before “The River” were sort of young man’s records but by the time I got to ”The River” I had taken notice of things that bond people to their lives, your work, your commitments, your families, I wanted to imagine and I wanted to write about those things…I figured if I could write about ‘em and imagine ‘em, maybe I’d get a little closer to having them in my own life…I wanted to make a record that felt as big as life, that felt like an E Street Band show (crowd cheers) I wanted it to have fun and dancing and laughter and jokes and good comradeship and love and faith and lonely nights and heartbreak and of course teardrops…I figured if I could make a record big enough to hold those things, I’d get a little closer to the answers and the home I was looking for so, uh…we want you to come with us tonight when we go back down to “The River” and let’s see what we find (crowd cheers)…” “Good evening, Baltimore (crowd cheers) are you ready to be entertained? (crowd cheers) are you ready to be transformed? (crowd cheers)…”
